Seersucker Shorts using Megan Nielsen Flint Pants

Today I want to share a creation inspired by a Needle Sharp box. I love this subscription service—the fabric never disappoints. In the July 2021 box, I received a beautiful royal blue and white seersucker. I opted to skip the included pattern that month, since I wanted to sew the Megan Nielsen Flint shorts. I finished these in October, just in time for winter in Minnesota! They have been sitting in my closet, waiting for a trip to Grand Cayman planned for late February.

I used view 3 of the Flint pants. I should have made a toile but tried to “cheat” by doing a flat pattern adjustment using my trouser block. Bad idea! The shorts were too tight around the upper thighs—the amount of ease required for the Flint shorts is quite different from a fitted trouser. I was able to piece additional fabric to the inner leg. I’ve convinced myself it isn’t too noticeable. For the rest, the pattern came together nicely. I like the opening and the buttons at the left hip (they were included in the Needle Sharp box).

After finishing the shorts, I still had almost 1 yard of fabric left—enough to make an airy top! I used a Burda Style pattern, 06/2018 #109. I cut size 18 and made a 1 inch small bust adjustment. I finished the neckline and armhole with bias tape made from the scraps of seersucker. I was able to skip the zipper under the left arm--there's quite a bit of ease. The tiny button at the back of the neck was from my stash.

I will probably not wear the top and shorts together but thought I would take a picture to see how it looks. What do you think? Together or separate?

That’s it for now! Until next time, happy sewing and stay safe.
